********************************************************************** My Lady ScandalousThe full title of Jo Manning's new book is "My Lady Scandalous: The Amazing Life and Outrageous Times of Grace Dalrymple Elliott, Royal Courtesan." (Already I feel that Jo is a woman after my own heart; I appreciate long titles since I tend to write that way, myself!) I am not ready to give a full review of the book for the simple reason that I am still reading it. I wanted to mention it to you, however, because it is both fun and enlightening. You will get to know Grace Elliott of course, but in addition to that, the book is brimming with extra information, sidebars and whole pages of insider info that any Regency fan will appreciate. Ms. Manning gives a compassionate take on Grace Elliott's life, which is new in itself as Elliott's previous biographers evidently did not. Manning's liking for her subject comes through very early on, in fact, and it isn't long before you find yourself rooting for Grace, too. I am FINDING time to read this book since I have none, really, and that, if you know me, speaks for itself. Next month, I'll be able to say more about the book, but already I feel very comfortable recommending it to you. I'm only in the fifth chapter, but Ms. Manning's comfort with her subject--indeed, with Georgian and Regency England-- is undeniable, and well worth reading. Also, the book is a lovely, large hardcover, with a wonderful Gainsborough portrait of Grace on the dustjacket. (If you don't see the images in this newsletter, click the link below. I've added this book to my "resources" page on my website.)
Available new and used from Amazon. Take a look. http://r.vresp.com/?LinoreRoseBurkard.co/a113a5bdfa/708436/TEST/TEST
********************************************************************** Regency (Fashion) Ripples In the Pool of TimeAm I the only one who has noticed that the "recent" fashion of short, high-waisted jackets and blouses with their long sleeves, and sometimes even a high collar, are virtual replicas of the Regency spencer?I love to make what I call a "Regency sighting." In other words, something in today's world that recalls the English Regency of the past. A ripple effect, if you will. Street names aside, I particularly enjoy fashion sightings, such as the above. Beginning from left to right: (All photos from Macys.com) a "cropped jacket" with a so-called "fresh" look. UPDATES: Made from machine washable linen, and in place of the straight lower hem around the waist, there's a curved line that meets at the first button; ties on the sleeves; deep Vee neck. Despite being called a "jacket" this looks more like a blouse. But picture a straight-flowing gown in place of the long tee and capris on the model, and you can see the resemblance to a Regency spencer. The sales page description is really a clincher--it's dry, but otherwise could be that of a heroine from our era! Check it out: "Details include notched lapel, two-button closure, princess seams with ruching and puffy short sleeves..." The center photo (A "Yank Cropped Jacket") is styled as "retro-chic," (Retro? They have no idea! ) and supposedly "hits at natural waist," which I take to mean cuts off there. Except that it is actually a bit longer than the natural waist or would cut off right under the bust. Overall, comes even closer to a Regency style spencer than the first pic. UPDATES: Cotton/spandex; lower "natural waist?" Right pic is perhaps closest to our idea of a Regency spencer, due to the full-length sleeves. Described as having a "fresh, new look," it misses the mark of the past by being low-waisted, and is made of polyester. I've seen better examples, but these are all I could post in a pinch. I hope to do a "Regency-sighting" feature every now and then, so I'll try and get better examples next time! If you look around at today's styles with an eye to the past, however, you are sure to see some prime "sightings" yourself.
I'll enter the drawings now! http://r.vresp.com/?LinoreRoseBurkard.co/c5e711e8c4/708436/TEST/TEST

********************************************************************** Mouthing Off Again? Not really! Just my humorous way of announcing that I now write a semi-monthly column called "Media and the Home" for EmphasisonMoms.com. It's got nothing to do with my love of the Regency, so I'm only mentioning it in passing. If you'd like to see my first contribution to this website, however, just click the link below.

********************************************************************** George III, Revisited Back in January when I sent out the very first issue of "Upon My Word!", I wrote an article about George III which asked the question, "What REALLY Happened to King George?" (Madness or Malady?)If you read it, you'll recall that the King had a disease which was mistaken for madness. We all know that eighteenth-century medicine was woefully inadequate to treat the illness (porphyria); but did you know that his physicians were responsible for actually hastening their royal patient's dementia and death--by poisoning him? To read how the King was inadvertently poisoned with arsenic while undergoing "treatment", click the following link.
At least they didn't slip it in his ear! http://r.vresp.com/?LinoreRoseBurkard.co/ef76fd4db9/708436/TEST/TEST
